Day 15 - August 30 - Hillman Ferry CG - Today we played golf at Lake Barkley SP GC and afterward stopped by the Bison and Elk Prairie on The Land Between the Lakes. On the way down, took a picture of the sky, which was the leading edge of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaac reaching our area. Pretty awesome!
Also on the way we spotted some wild turkeys - butterballs for sure!!
We did not see any Elk because it was very hot. I'm sure they were hiding out under some cool tree!! But we did see plenty of Bison -- heading straight for our car!
Wouldn't want to mess with this guy!!
Day 16 - August 31 - Hillman Ferry CG - This morning Larry got up early and went golfing and I slept in. Then we headed out on another day trip with our first stop being the Trail of the Tears Commerative Park in Hopkinsville. This site is one of the few documented sites of actual trail/campsites used during the forced removal of the Indians and is the burial site of two burial chiefs.
And spotted right in front of the monument was this Amish man with his wagon going down the street.
Moving along the country roads we spotted our first crop of tobacco. This tobacco grows as tall as I am!
Then a stop to check out Lake Malone SP.
Next on to Central City, home to the Everly Brothers. This landmark is a tribute to the two brothers whose harmonic talents are still as popular today as they were in the years past.
And to end the day a few full moon shots.
Moon shot between the trees
Day 17 - September 1 - Today the only exciting thing we did was go to Wal-Mart and eat lunch at the 4 Little Pigs BBQ House in Benton. Then the rains came down well into the evening.
Day 18 - September 2 - We woke up this morning and this guy (2 campers over) had a tree smashed into his truck!! Not a pretty sight. Again today the rains came down. We wanted to try out this catfish place, the Katfish Kitchen, for lunch. It's a good thing we got there early because when we left it was standing room only. Real good food!!
And here's a picture of our motorhome at Hillman Ferry CG at the Land Between the Lakes.
Day 19 - September 3 - Travel day from Hillman Ferry CG to the Mammoth Cave area. After setting up camp we spotted this down the road. LLOYD AND SYLVIA, WE THINK YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR FRONT YARD!!
Day 20 - September 4 - Mammoth Cave Area - It's raining again and what a perfect day to tour Mammoth Cave. Mammoth Cave has 391 miles of explored cave with only 12 miles available to tour by the public.
Mammoth Cave Historic Entrance
In the area below the cave served as a mine for saltpeter, key to the manufacture of gunpowder. Before the war of 1812 enslaved persons mined large quantities of this mineral.
What do you see below?
Larry trying to squeeze through!!
After leaving the Mammoth Cave area, we headed over to Bowling Green and the National Corvette Museum. Here are just a few of the Corvettes we saw:
'53 Corvette
'58 Corvette
Me driving the simulator -- bad driver!!
The Corvette below was created with thousands of minature photos of various people with their Corvettes
Inside the Corvette Museum was a memorial to the victims of 9/11. Here are a few photos:
This flag was stitched with photos of emergency workers who perished
Seeing this antenna piece brought back memories of my visit to New York City in 1999 with friends Mary, Wendy and Sandra. I have pictures of us on top of the North Tower
Our next stop was to the Lost River Cave for a what we thought was a boat ride through a cave. Well yea, it was a boat ride, but it was short, had a lame guy trying out his jokes on us and was very disappointing.
This was a "blue hole" just outside of the cave
Also on the trail outside the cave, some nature pictures. I believe this is a Carolina Chickadee. BOB DOUAT, CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.
And these beautiful butterflies
Day 21 - September 5 - Mammoth Cave Area - Today we headed up a little bit north to the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. Sinking Spring Farm is the birthplace of our 16th President. The Memorial Building houses the symbolic cabin.
Sinking Spring
Cathy, Mary Todd and Abe Lincoln
We then ventured a little further up the road to Knob Hill, Abraham Lincoln's boyhood home.
Moving on we stopped off at Green River Lake State Park, another one of Kentucky's beautiful lakes.
Then driving through Greensburgh we spotted this old Courthouse, one of the oldest public buildings still standing in Kentucky. The Courthouse was built between 1802-1804 and was a courthouse for 135 years.
Larry waking up the town!
Our last stop of the day was to Nolin Lake State Park, another great lake.
We couldn't get out of there fast enough trying to get back to camp before the sky fell!
In Mammoth Cave NP we had to cross over the Green River on this ferry. Why not build a bridge? I just figured because of the ambience of the ferry. Pretty cool!!! This guy goes back and forth all day long with no more than 2 cars at a time!
